DOTRA’S…DotLine…..
A Publication of the N.J. Department of Transportation Retirees Association Inc.
By Chet Andres
DOTRA meetings and Luncheons and the DOTLINE are the ways that our Members learn of the happenings and interests of the Association.
When you renew your Annual membership or get a Quarterly copy of the DOTLINE, send us a note back with what is going on with you and your family. This is how we keep contact despite the distances which separate us. Each issue of the DOTLINE has a Form which you can use to inform us of some of the things you used to discuss with your co-workers, such as trips you take, meetings with former NJDOT colleagues we may not heard about or seen for a long time, etc. With your cooperation and input, the DOTLINE can continue to be a link to new and old friendships.
DOTRA continues to have three vacant Director positions. It is at our June Luncheon that we look for new nominations from our Membership to fill these vacancies. In addition, we have seven Directors who are due for renewal in 2007. Our Board is getting older and we are getting more new retirees into our Membership.
I am entering my final year as your President in this coming year, and it is time to step down and make room for the newcomers! I intend to continue as a Director after that.
Right now is an excellent time to step forward and volunteer to take an active role in our Association. Take a look at the List of Directors and DOTRA’s Executive Board on Page 3 of this issue of DOTLINE. There’s room for you in this List! Start as a Director! Start NOW!

SPRING LUNCHEON HELD
ON MARCH 14th
Many thanks to Director Jim Springstead (Graphics) for stepping up and organizing the Spring Luncheon this year – held at Roman Hall. More than 55 people braved the NJ winter to attend. Reports are that a good time was had by all attendees.
FLORIDA REUNION ON THE “WEST COAST” A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS !
Reports are still being received from our Florida Ambassador at Large - Frank Wegel about the very successful Florida Reunion held on the west coast of Florida at Bonita Fairways CC in Bonita Springs on Tuesday February 13, 2007.
Cliff Heckman (Materials) worked steadily on arrangements for the event through 2006 - not easy when you are residing in New Jersey during the summer months, and checked out the Bonita Springs site at the recommendation of Fergie Reeves (Procurement). It was a perfect spot. There were 56 people in attendance – many had not been seen since leaving the NJDOT !
While there were a few “snowbirds” from the North, most are Florida residents. From Bonita Springs and NJ were Ann and Fergie Reeves (Procurement), from Punta Gorda, Betty and Don Clark (Electrical). From Cape Coral there were - Richie Svetz ( C&M), Anthony Gelak (C&M), Eugene Smith (Design).
Jim Morrison ( Design) came down from The Villages, Fred Bogdan (Design) from Port Charlotte, Roy Tindall (Design) from Sun City Center, Frank Battaglia (C&M), Ted Stine (C&M) and Sante Falvo (C&M) from Naples. Jack Crouteau (Research) and his wife drove from New Port Richey, Peg and Bob Micai (C&M) drove down from central Florida in Clermont with Barbara and Al Ari (C&M) who are “snowbirds” staying in the Naples area.
Representing the east coast of Florida were Jim and Trude Hart (Data Processing) from Royal Palm Beach, Al Alaimo (C&M) and Frank Wegel (C&M) from Sebastian. Dot and Chet Andres drove down from New Smyrna Beach. Al Malatesta (C&M) drove over from Fort Pierce area. Among the snowbirds were: reliable Reunion attendees Ted Hamler (C&M) from Belvidere,NJ, joined by Frank Scarpati (C&M). Ray Colanduoni ( Support Services) who lives in Venice FL in the winter and Manahawkin in the summer was joined by Pete Fell (Finance) now living in South Carolina, and DOTRA Director Al Gallo (Safety) visiting from NJ.
Navinchandra Patel (C&M) resides in Monmouth Junction NJ but was visiting his son and family in Bonita Springs where his son and daughter-in-law have their medical practices. Actually, Navinchandra had just arrived from his annual visit to India the day before and made a special effort to attend!
Among those driving the furthest for the occasion were Laurie and Jack Lutz (Reg 2-C&M) who now reside in Lexington, South Carolina.
Actually, the old Region 2 Newark Office was well represented with Al Alaimo. Dot Andres, Al Ari, Don Clark, Bob Micai and Frank Wegel.
Thanks to Laurie and Jack Lutz - there are some great photos on the DOTRA Website!!
Hopefully, no one has been left out of this list- our apologies if so! And, many thanks to the spouses who joined in the festivities.
The 2008 Florida Reunion will be held on Tuesday February 12th, 2008 at the historic Clewiston Inn in Clewiston Florida. Clewiston is on the southwest shore of Lake Okeechobee in south central Florida- reachable from I-95 on the East and I -75 from the West. Trude and Jim Hart are in charge of arrangements at the Clewiston Inn. More details will be forthcoming from our Florida representative Frank Wegel. Save the date and arrange your 2008 schedule in the Florida area.

HERE AND THERE
By Dot Andres
We’d like to meet and hear about some of those good things you are doing! Participate in the fun and share your lives with the rest of us.
Harold Yaede (Utilities) enclosed a note with his renewal, giving us a change of address, and letting us know that he and his wife celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary on March 2nd. Congratulations!! He also said that Utilities was a great Unit!
John Brennan of Local Aid, retired in 1991 after 35 years, wrote to let us know of the recent passing of Russell Brown (Local Aid).
Anthony Brinker (PE&O) writes that he “still misses the place!”
Roy Neuman (C&M- Area Supervisor in Freehold) reports that he and wife Mary Ann spent the month of January at beautiful Anna Maria Island in Florida. Loved the white sand beach and relaxing at the Pirate’s Den.
Audrey Homan Sperling (Traffic Oper) always sends a brief note with her renewal- Audrey moved to Dept of Treasury in 1965 after beginning her career with the NJDOT in 1949 - working with Jerry Osborn and Jim Malloy.
Joe O’Brien (Traffic Engrg) says to tell his old friends he’s “still kicking down in South Carolina.” Nice to hear from you Joe.
Nick Nicu (GeoTech) send his regards to old friends and co-workers at the NJDOT. Nick resides in the Spruce Creek Fly-In community of Port Orange FL and regretfully missed the Florida Reunion this year- a first miss for Nick.
Angel and Jay Johnston (Budget) report that the King Tut Exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia is a spectacular. This may be the last time these items are shown in the United States since Egypt is building a museum in Cairo to house these items. Reservations are needed, so contact the Franklin Institute to catch this memorable display of ancient history.
A number of our members are renewing as LIFE Members. That’s good and that’s bad- we will not hear from you at least once a year- unless you make that special effort to write! We have more than 190 LIFE Members now - unfortunately we sometimes miss hearing of those that have passed on. We rely on you to keep us informed!
REMEMBER THE ANNUAL LUNCHEON
CRANBURY INN, CRANBURY NJ

MEMBERS’ HUMOR CORNER
50th Anniversary
With a couple celebrating their 50th Anniversary at the church’s marriage marathon, the Minister asked Brother Richard to
share some insight into how he managed to live with the same woman all these years. The husband replied to the Congregation, “Well, I treated her with respect, spent money on her, but mostly took her
traveling on special occasions.” The Minister asked here, “Trips to where?’ For our 25th Anniverary, I took her to Beijing China,” said the husband. The Minister said, “What a terrific example you are to all husbands. Please tell the audience what you are going to do for
your wife on your 50th Anniversary.” To which he replied, “ I’m going back to get her.” "Cool “ Super Market A new Super Market opened near my house. It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it
goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain. When you approach the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and experience the scent of fresh hay. When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cackle and the air is filled with the aroma of bacon and eggs frying. I don’t buy toilet paper there any more! HAPPY WIFE
A couple is lying in bed. The husband says, “ I’m going to make you the happiest woman in the world.” His wife replies, “ I’ll really miss you.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
