  PRESIDENT’S REPORT

                                    By Chet Andres

DOTRA continues to remain strong continuing with almost 400 members after 16 years.  Three new Directors have been elected to  our DOTRA Board – Janis Stia, Art Egan and Peter Yull. Janis retired from the Support Services in 1999 and joined DOTRA immediately.   Art Egan retired in 2006 after working in a number of Units in the NJDOT including C&M and IS.  Peter Yull is a new retiree, retiring in 2007  from Support Services after 23 years.  They are willing to assist the Board with its various social events and planning other functions.

A new group of retirees have left the NJDOT.  We are working closely with the administrative offices to contact as many as possible and invite them to join DOTRA.  As an incentive to join we are inviting them to a new Membership to DOTRA and an invitation to attend our picnic as free guests in September.

Plans are being made for our Holiday Luncheon in December which will be held this year at the new banquet facility at Mercer County’s Mountain View Golf Course in West Trenton.  Look for details in the next DOTLINE.

After several years, our Monthly business meetings will be moving from Roman Hall in Trenton to Leonardo’s Restaurant  on Route 1 south in Lawrenceville.  All are welcome to attend.  The luncheon starts at 11:30 with our business meeting following immediately.  Thanks to Director Sal Noto for making the arrangements.

KATRINA TRIP II

                                      By Jim Dixon

My wife Lois and I went on a mission trip to Gautier Mississippi in August 2006 with a group of ten other volunteers from the United Presbyterian Church in Yardville NJ as part of the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program.

Our group drove down in two vans, a distance of 1200 miles.  We made it in two days, stopping overnight at a Presbyterian church in Kingsport, TN.

The camp in Gautier, MS was very rustic.  We slept in what they called pods.  They were tent size buildings made out of plastic coated cardboard that the mail carriers’ baskets are made of.  Each pod has two cots for sleeping and a third cot to put your things on because the floors got wet when it rained.  There was a trailer with showers and sinks, port-a-johns, and a large tent that was the kitchen and dining hall.  The accommodations really weren’t bad when the weather was dry,but when it rained the camp got flooded.  One day we had a heavy rainstorm and had water around our pods almost up to our knees.  We had to be evacuated overnight to the Gautier Presbyterian Church.  The other problems we encountered were that it was so humid and hot ( upper 90’s to 100 degrees) and that the bugs were big and plentiful.  There were lots of mosquitoes, toads, fiddler crabs, huge roaches, black widow spiders, locusts, crickets, crawfish and fire ants just to mention a few.

Every morning after we prepared and cleaned up our breakfast, we fixed our bag lunches: cleaned the showers, sinks and pot-o-johns: we went to the work sites. Our group was divided into two work teams, each team being assigned to a different job.  These jobs included: removing debris from inside condemned homes, installing a door on a trailer home, building a 10x14 foot metal storage she, setting up a 20x20 foot tent for storage, filling potholes in a warehouse access road, and insulating and wall boarding an entire home.

The trip to Mississippi was a wonderful experience for us.  In addition to feeling like we did help the Katrina victims, we got to know the members of our group better and discovered what good people they are.  We especially came to realize that there are a lot of wonderful youth in the world even though we usually only hear about the troublemakers.  Also, we felt a connection as Americans.  There were volunteers coming from all over the U.S. to help fellow Americans, the Katrina victims.   Lastly, we discovered that you don’t have to be young, strong, or talented for God to use you in His service.  God will use anyone – you just have to be willing!
